Peter
Clark in the guise of Papageno, the local bird-catcher, whose
merry life lacks only one item a nice little wife with
whom he can share his nest. But Papageno, with his mouth locked shut, soon
finds out that lying about the heroic deeds which others have
accomplished carries grave consequences. Tamino, (Michael
Posey), commiserates.
|
A portrait
of the young and beautiful Pamina, daughter of the star-blazing
Queen of the Night, given to Tamino (Michael Posey) by
the Three Ladies, inflames his heart with unknown feelings of
love...
|
When
the Queen of the Night (Heather Connolly) hears of Taminos
ardor, she appears to him and charges him to rescue her kidnapped
daughter from Sarastro and his band. In exchange for which, she
tells him, Pamina shall be his forever!
|

- The Second Lady (Kalyna Cholhan) presents
Tamino (Michael Posey) with a magic flute, a gift from
the Queen to aid in his endeavor. Meanwhile, the Third Lady (Christa
Damaris) presents Papageno (Peter Clark) with some
magic bells as an incentive to follow along with the Prince.
|
Pamina
(Victoria Wolfe) begs for mercy from Sarastros evil
servant, Monostatos (Lawrence Street). Monostatos gloats
on his prize, having just foiled the young girls escape.
|
Papageno (Peter Clark), having
found the kidnapped Pamina (Victoria Wolfe), explains
to her that Tamino, having fallen in love with her through her
portrait, is on his way to rescue her from the clutches of Sarastro.
|
Subsequently,
Pamina (Victoria Wolfe) consoles Papageno (Peter Clark)
on his lack of a girlfriend, stating that he should have patience
and the gods will send him one when he would least imagine it.
|
Three Spirits [from
left: Second Spirit, Leslie Schipa, First Spirit,
Vera Massarotto, Third Spirit, Barbara Burnham Fox],
sent by the gods to aid Tamino (Michael Posey) on his
quest, caution him to be silent, patient and steadfast.
|
Meanwhile, Tamino (Michael Posey)
wonders how he will go about the next stage of his quest
which pathway should he follow? which doorway shall be
opened to him?
|

- The Speaker of the Temple of Wisdom (Isaac Miller)
questions Tamino (Michael Posey) on his reasons for seeking
entrance into the Temple. The quest for wisdom has not brought
him here, but thoughts of revenge!
|
Tamino (Michael Posey) learns
some of the power of the magic flute as its strains soothe the
savage fury of a forest tiger (Kathleen Corke).
|
Foiling
their attempt to escape, Pamina and Papageno are menaced by Monostatos
(Lawrence Street center) and some of the
slaves (First Slave, DAndré Williams left;
Third Slave, Joshua Parrillo, and Second Slave, Alan
Reese, right). Papageno (Peter Clarkon
his knees) uses the magic bells to charm them into docile
fellows.
|
Sarastro
(Andrew Martens) relieves Paminas (Victoria Wolfe)
fears and doubts. He knows, he tells her, of her secret longings
and would never force her to do anything against her will.
|
The Speaker (Isaac Miller) and Sarastro
(Andrew Martens) exchange understanding glances as the lovers
Tamino (Michael Posey) and Pamina (Victoria Wolfe) see each other
for the first time.
|

But Monostatos (Lawrence Street) steps between
them, explaining to Sarastro that he is the one who foiled their
plot to escape! He, the ever watchful servant... And Sarastro
promises him a just reward for his vigilance...
|
...70
lashes shall be his reward! [Monostatos (Lawrence Street)
center. Slaves (Alan Reese, left and Joshua
Parrillo, right) drag him away as The Speaker (Isaac
Miller) looks on.]
|
The act
ends as Tamino and Papageno are led off to begin the purification
ritual. Sarastro leads Pamina away to await the outcome of the
trials.
