NCE UPON A TIME, in a little cottage at the edge of a very dark forest, there lived a poor broommaker with his wife and their two children, Hansel and Gretel ...
The set for Act I by Nino Novellino
Tired of chores, Hansel (Mariella Nocetti) and Gretel (Kathleen Corke) while away the time until supper in a mock battle of the brooms...
Gretel (Kathleen Corke) attempts to teach her less graceful brother, Hansel (Mariella Nocetti), to dance...
In a moment of passion and frustration, a jug containing the milk for supper, is broken. After sending the children into the woods to find some wild strawberries, Gertrude, their mother (Lisa Smith) bemoans their poverty and the loss of the milk.
Peter, the father (Peter Clark) explains that there is an evil witch who lives in the wood and lures unsuspecting young children to her house with the promise of food then turns them into gingerbread to eat them!
“The Witches’ Ride”
Lost at night in the woods, Hansel (Mariella Nocetti) & Gretel (Kathleen Corke) begin to imagine horrible things around them.
The next morning, the extraordinarily cheerful Dew Fairy (Bonnie Draina) awakens the forest and the sleeping children...
Awaking in the woods, the children find a magnificent, candy-encrusted cottage overlooked in the gloom of the evening before...
Hansel (Mariella Nocetti) explains to Gretel (Kathleen Corke) that the cottage must belong to the angels who watched over them the previous evening...
Hansel (Mariella Nocetti) and Gretel (Kathleen Corke) enjoy a moment of intense gustatory delight, while the gingerbread-starved Witch (Janean Sherwin) steps out of her domestic confection...
Caught nibbling by the Witch (Janean Sherwin), Hansel (Mariella Nocetti) and Gretel (Kathleen Corke) are stunned indeed. She is definitely not the expected inhabitant of the house!
Under the spell of the Witch (Janean Sherwin), the promises all manner of delicious foods begins to sound pretty good to Hansel (Mariella Nocetti), but Gretel (Kathleen Corke) is not so sure...
“Now Gretel, be obedient and wise, while Hansel’s getting fat and nize,” the Witch (Janean Sherwin) admonishes Gretel (Kathleen Corke)...
“...you’re so tender, plump and good, just the thing for witch’s food!” daydreams the Witch (Janean Sherwin)...
“So hop, hop, hop, gallop, gallop, My broomsitck nag, come do not lag,” sings the Witch (Janean Sherwin)...
[One more step, Janean, and I think you’ll have it!]

“That’s right, just bend over and peek in the oven to see if it’s hot enough yet...” says the Witch (Janean Sherwin) to Gretel...

Pushing the Witch into her own oven breaks her spell, and all the gingerbread cookies turn back into boys and girls. Finally, the happy pair are once again reunited with their parents...
Peter (Peter Clark), Hansel (Mariella Nocetti), Gretel (Kathleen Corke) and Gertrude (Lisa Smith) are in the front.
(At the back: Dr. Mary Naddeo, Max Jefferson, Elridge Bracey and Granville Green)
Peter (Peter Clark) explains that justice has been accomplished — the evil Witch has been caught in her own trap. Hansel (Mariella Nocetti), Gretel (Kathleen Corke), Gertrude (Lisa Smith) and a couple of former gingerbread cookies (Granville Green, at back and Elridge Bracy at right) echo his sentiments...
