Offenbach, that king of comic invention, turns one of Mythology’s most sacred stories into a ribald comedy with twists and turns never dreamed of by the ancient Greeks! In lieu of an amorous couple separated on their wedding day by the bite of a serpent, Orpheus and his wife, Euridice, are a couple on the verge of divorce. Only when she runs away (to Hades) with the boy next door (Pluto in disguise), is Orpheus, forced by Public Opinion, to follow her there and bring her back. On the way we meet some pretty daffy gods, and some savagely funny situations, culminating in a foot-stompingly “divine” Can-can, probably Offenbach’s most popular tune ever!
