The mysterious circumstances of the Mozart Requiem’s commission, and the fact that it was left incomplete at his death, have ensured a continuing fascination with his last composition. Completed in several more-and-less successful versions by other composers, it remains a remarkable work and, perhaps the greatest of its rivals (the Verdi, Berlioz and Brahms “Requiems” — all of which share its passion and grandeur). It was, however, the first of these, and therefore, has always been the quintessential model against which to measure the others. It looks quite forward onto the Nineteenth Century and the Romantic period while remaining totally pristine in its Classicism. And, in Mozart’s incomparable style, it seems transcendent—simultaneously illuminated by the light of this world and the next!...
